EUR/GBP turns negative on UK data
FXStreet (Mumbai) - The pound holds mild gains versus the shared currency in the European session; turning EUR/GBP in red on the 0.72 handle, as sterling gained momentum after UK’s data which showed that jobless rate in the Kingdom fell while wages ticked up slightly in February.
Pounds rises to session highs on upbeat UK data
Currently, the EUR/GBP cross turned negative at fresh session lows of 0.7197 post data release. The cross in EUR/GBP snapped upside and fell in red on pound strength after Britain’s jobless rate fell to 5.6% in February while wage growth was only slightly up for pay excluding bonuses but pay including bonuses rose lower than the previous three months.
The number of people claiming unemployment benefits fell by 20,700 slightly above January's fall of 29,100. Despite this, the claimant count rate fell in line with expectations to 2.3%. The last time it was lower than this was in February 1975.
On the other hand, the euro remains elevated against the US dollar amid re-emergence of Greece debt concerns while markets await Euro zone final CPI figures due out shortly.
EUR/GBP Levels to consider
To the upside, the next resistance is located at 0.7242 (April 14 High) and above which it could extend gains to at 0.7274 (April 13 High) levels. To the downside immediate support might be located at 0.7161 (April 16 Low) levels below that at 0.7152 (March 19 Low) levels.
